HapMap is to benefit genetic research on complex diseases

A consortium of six nations announced on October 29, 2002 that they are about to embark on a massive new genomics endeavor, the HapMap project. The ambitious goal of the project is to analyze chunks of haplotypes to yield clues of genetic underpinnings in complex common diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, arthritis, cancer, diabetes, and schizophrenia. To date, genetic understanding of diseases has been confined to conditions such as Huntington’s disease, hemophilia, or cystic fibrosis that involves mutations of a single gene.
